Day 6 - Keremeos - Kelowna

Read in French (provided by Google Translate)
Distance:108km (GPS gave wrong reading again today, will definitely get a new speedometer tomorrow)
Time:4:45
Ascent:995m
Total Time:18:48
Average:24.4km/h
Weather: Very nice day, a little hot, but ain't going to complain about that. We had a good steady head wind.
Total Distance:520.65km

The stop in Keremeos was not so pleasant... The hotel was definitely sub-par and the food was also not very satisfying. But that's all part of the experience. The only very positive of Keremeos is the cherries!

We all started the day early, knowing the temperature would reach record warmth. What caught my attention this morning is the shadow cast by the mountains on the road even at 8:45 in the morning. How often do you see that? I know that in Montreal, that never happens...

We started the morning on the rather calm Highway 3A which is pretty calm, but we quickly swithced to Highway 97N. Unfortunatly this change brought a whole lot of traffic. I would never have thought of riding this road if Velo Quebec hadn't told us. At some point I was even questioning that i was on the right road. Despite all this the scenery was again fabulous. We went up and down along the Okanagan River. I've seen a lot of nice suburbs, especially Pentincton.

The average speed was negatively affected by a pretty strong head wind today. But with the hot weather this played both with us and against us. When we were riding along the river, the breeze was cool and refreshing. When going uphill the breeze was making the heat from the asphalt raise. I was also going fairly slow along the Beach Road right after lunch, there was a lot to look at if you see what i mean!

When finally arriving in Kelowna, we had to wait for the luggage for a little while because there was a bad accident (thank god not with cyclists) just before the bridge that gives access to Kelowna which created a monster traffic jam (not very familiar with the surrounding but it seems that's the only access road to the city from the west).

After the shower, i wanted to be in the sun as long as possible so i grabbed my shoes and went walking around the city and along the lake shore. Again a lot to look at there!!! The fact that we're breaking record warmth here helps a little (a lot?).

Tomorrow (day 7) is a free day. Again very nice weather is forecasted. I don't plan to do anything special. Laundry is on the list as well as replacing my speedometer. I intent to visit the beach again if only to bench and read a book.

Here are a couple of pictures from today's ride.

Okanagan Lake from our lunch area. Water was pretty cold, then again i'm not a big swimmer.
